It is tempting to plan marketing as a list of activities: post on social three times a week, run search ads, send a monthly newsletter. Activity feels like progress. But without a clear link to business goals, it is hard to know what is working — or what to stop.

Step 1: Agree on a few business goals

Pick a small number of outcomes the business genuinely cares about this year, such as more qualified enquiries for a specific service, growth in online sales, or entering a new market. Fewer goals make better decisions easier.

Step 2: Understand who you need to reach

For each goal, describe the people who need to act: what they are trying to achieve, what they search for, where they spend time online, and what would make them trust you.

Step 3: Choose channels that fit

Only now choose channels. Someone actively searching for a service is best reached through search. Someone who doesn’t know they need you yet may be better reached through social or content. The right mix depends on the goal and the audience — not on what everyone else is doing.

Step 4: Define how you will measure progress

  • Decide what success looks like for each goal.
  • Make sure tracking is in place before campaigns launch.
  • Choose a small set of metrics you will actually review.

Step 5: Plan in quarters, review often

A year is a long time in digital marketing. Plan the year in outline, the next quarter in detail, and review what you have learned at the end of each quarter before committing to the next.

Think about the opportunity, target the right people, and keep improving what works.

That is the thinking behind our Think · Target · Thrive approach. If you’d like help turning your goals into a plan, book a consultation.
