Technical SEO sounds intimidating, but for most small business websites it comes down to a handful of checks. None of them guarantees rankings — nothing does — but each one removes an obstacle between your pages and the people searching for them.

1. Can search engines find your pages?

  • Submit an XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
  • Check that robots.txt is not blocking important pages.
  • Look for pages marked “noindex” that should be indexed.

2. Does every page load properly on mobile?

Most searches happen on phones. Open your key pages on a real mobile device: text should be readable without zooming, buttons easy to tap, and nothing should spill off the side of the screen.

3. Is the site reasonably fast?

  • Compress and correctly size images.
  • Remove plugins and scripts you no longer use.
  • Use caching and a good host.

Core Web Vitals in Search Console show which pages need attention first.

4. Is every page clearly structured?

  • One clear H1 per page, followed by logical H2 and H3 headings.
  • A unique, descriptive title tag and meta description for each important page.
  • Descriptive link text instead of repeated “click here” links.

5. Are there duplicate or broken pages?

Fix broken links, redirect old URLs to their closest new equivalent, and use canonical tags where similar pages exist. A tidy site is easier for search engines to understand.

6. Is your business information accurate?

Structured data (such as Organization or LocalBusiness schema) and consistent contact details across your site and listings help search engines — and answer engines — describe your business correctly.

7. Is it secure?

Use HTTPS everywhere, keep WordPress and plugins updated, and make sure forms are protected against spam.

Work through these once, then revisit them every few months. If you would like a second opinion, our Search Visibility team can run a technical audit.
